Freshness is very important so you can check on all your supplies sell by dates, the staff may well be involved with home brewing and be a good way to get tips and advice on the subject.  As with the equipment, you can buy these things from the internet and that is fine.  But get to know your retailer whoever you use and make sure you are confident you are getting the highest quality materials and advise for your home brewing supplies it will make a big difference.
